Grieslap to Kandersteg

That was today’s plan but we all know about the best laid plans. As usual my hiking day began in the rain (she said bitterly). As the hours and miles passed the rain slacked off but the fog settled in. Every now and then it lifted and I got a peak of sun and of the view I was missing. I was disappointed and discouraged that I was missing out.

About this time, things begin to improve (things do not include the weather) The trail began a steep ascent to the pass. I was surrounded by fog which created an otherworldly experience. This is one of the coolest hikes I’ve ever taken. Because the trail was steep and sometimes slick I had to be meticulous with my steps so I didn’t fall. That slowed me way down and I realized that reaching Gandersteg before dark was unlikely.

The trail ascended to the pass with the help of 520 steps. Once there the weather took a real turn. It became much colder with fierce winds and the rain started again. Although I had the right gear to keep going, it seemed prudent to end my day at Blumlisalphutte, an alpine hut at the pass. Some fellow hikers also encouraged me. It was a pretty obvious choice, really. Everyone here is so kind and welcoming. I’ve already been invited to join some new friends at their table to chat. I notified my hotel that I won’t be there till tomorrow (fortunately it’s a 2 night stay). If I didn’t show up, Bill would be notified. Nothing good about that!

Didn’t plan on this unique added adventure. I. Am. Loving. This.
